Ladies 39 v 7 Loughborough 2nds

Icons Playing Away—and Winning

The unbeaten icons had just enough players to make a team so there were no subs should any eye shadow start to run, should any hair slides slip out of place or should any other fashion difficulties necessitate a player having to leave the field. In an attempt to add a more serious attitude both Gripper and Jo, making their first appearances, dispensed with the blonde Essex girl hair colouring, though Gripper’s rainbow effort could have been used to distract the opposition had she not covered it with her scrum cap. Runny was back at 10 and Beaver at 15 though the latter’s diet of prisoner of war rations made her difficult to see when hiding behind the goalpost.

The ladies started in dominant fashion particularly in the ruck and this was to be a feature throughout the game. With support players consistently removing opposition bodies, the Vet was able to feed a constant supply of good ball to the backs and eventually Myfanwy scored close to the posts. With Runny in the side there might have been conflict over who was to take the conversion but the welsh refugee quickly teed up and missed as expected. Her embarrassment at this was nothing however compared to her failure to score when over the line shortly after. Not wishing to get her knees dirty she decided to gently sit on the ground and place the ball when she was comfortable. The Loughborough defence were less squeamish and burrowed beneath her to prevent the ball being grounded.

This setback proved temporary and 5 minutes later Runny received a pass 10 metres out, growled at the three home defenders, handed 2 of them off and scored. Unfortunately at this stage her kicking was on a par with Myfanwy’s so the score remained 10-0.

A third try followed when several forwards interpassed, the ball was recycled, Whiplash made a half break and the newest star of the Sentinelle, glamorous granny Ange was up in support to score. Runny added the conversion but shortly afterwards, following a dropped ball, the Loughborough no 13 burst through the Ladies’ defence to score under the posts and at 17-7 the game was still in the balance. This uncertainty was soon banished when Myfanwy evaded 3 would be tacklers on a solo run to the line where she ensured the ball was correctly placed. Runny’s conversion gave the icons a 24-7 half time advantage which they were never to relinquish.

The second half saw Laura moving from flanker to wing in a swap with Daisy. The fact that the left wing was where the WAG was one of only 5 Longton supporters had nothing to do with this tactical move. Actually Laura made some pretty good moves herself, stepping off her left and cutting inside.

The second half saw 3 more Longton tries, Runny’s second, Myfanwy’s third and one from captain Whiplash who ignored support and used her own strength to bulldoze through. None were converted as Runny’s golden boots had lost their magic but a 39-7 scoreline shows that there is a big chance of league success if injuries are avoided, hair colour is kept in check and crime is cut so that police and prison officers are not given extra shifts. It seems then that Longton success is entirely dependent on the government’s fight against crime- Oh Dear!!One name not mentioned so far is that of Roo who was immense. No…this is not a diet issue, but an observation of how she tackled fiercely and on numerous occasions stripped the ball from the hands of the Loughborough girls in the mauls. Finally praise for the coach who is moulding the icons into a team with discipline, commitment and no mean skill levels.
